General

Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Pinyin readings reflect standard Mandarin usage; for some dialect alternative names it may be of little practical use, especially for South China. Many Korean glosses are highly tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.

The bulbuls are officially known in Chinese as 鹎 bēi. The most commonly seen bulbul, the Chinese Bulbul Pycnonotus sinensis, is popularly known as the 白头翁 bái-tóu wēng or 'white-headed old man', referring to the white patch on the nape which becomes even whiter as the bird gets older. This name is still officially used in Taiwan, but has been regularised in the Mainland official names as 白头翁 bái-tóu bēi or 'white-headed bulbul'. (Note: The equivalent Japanese and Vietnamese terms for 'white-haired old man', 白頭翁 hakutō-ō and Bạch đầu ông respectively, refer to varieties of starling).

There has been some regularisation of the Chinese names.

冠鹎 guān-bēi 'crested bulbul' is used for the genus Alophoixus.

短脚鹎 duǎn-jiǎo-bēi 'short-legged bulbul' is used for the old Hypsipetes genus, now four genera.
