General names
The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections are welcome.
Vietnamese has three separate names for the bulbuls. Only the first is listed in ordinary Vietnamese dictionaries.
Chào mào is the name of the 'Red-whiskered bulbul' (Pycnonotus jocosus). In combination with descriptors, this name is also used for Spizixos (finchbills) and several other birds belonging to Pycnonotus.
Bông lau is used for most members of Pycnonotus (apart from those known as Chào mào).
Cành cạch is used for the genera Criniger, Iole, Ixos, Hemixos, and Hypsipetes.
