General names

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections are welcome.

Note on Vietnamese naming: With the exception of ducks and chickens, it is common for Vietnamese bird names to be preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird', although it is normally omitted in Vietnamese bird lists. All bird names, whether they include chim or not, can be preceded by the classifier con, which is used for living creatures.

Vietnamese has three separate names for the bulbuls. Only the first is listed in ordinary Vietnamese dictionaries.

Chim chào mào is the name of the 'Red-whiskered Bulbul' (Pycnonotus jocosus). In combination with descriptors, this name is also used for the genus Spizixos (finchbills) and several other birds belonging to Pycnonotus. Mào means 'crest' in Vietnamese.

Chim bông lau is used for most members of Pycnonotus (apart from those known as Chào mào). In its most straightforward meaning, the term Chim bông lau means 'reed-blossom bird'.

Chim cành cạch is used for the genera Criniger, Iole, Ixos, Hemixos, and Hypsipetes. Cành cạch is an onomatoepic word that refers to clacking and rattling noises, a probable reference to the noisiness of these birds.

There is also the name Chim hoành hoạch, used for the Streak-eared Bulbul and others (also Chim trao tráo or Chim trao trảo).
