Only featuring in recent Mongolian lists, the Flavescent Bulbul has been given the borrowed name Бөлбөл bölböl. This is clearly a modern borrowing from Western languages. The original Turkic meaning is not 'bulbul' but 'nightingale'.

In Inner Mongolia, the bulbuls are given the name of Шагшуур shagshuur, probably related to the word шагших shagshikh 'to chatter' (used of birds). The name Шагшуур shagshuur is not usually found in dictionaries.
