General

Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Pinyin readings reflect standard Mandarin usage; for some dialect alternative names it may be of little practical use, especially for South China. Many Korean glosses are highly tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.

This group of birds is found only in the far south of China, particularly in Yunnan. Their names are mostly calques on foreign names and don't appear to be based on names used by local people (if such exist -- they are not listed or noted in any sources).

The sunbirds are known literally as 太阳鸟 tàiyáng-niǎo 'sun-bird'. The genera Hypogramma and Nectarinia are set apart ornithologically as 花蜜鸟 huā-mì-niǎo 'nectar bird'. The spider hunters have been given the name 捕蛛鸟 bǔ-zhū-niǎo 'catch-spider-bird'.
