General names

Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Species list may not be current. Korean glosses are only tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.

Two bulbuls are found in Japan. The Chestnut-eared Bulbul (Ixos amaurotis) is known as the ヒヨドリ hiyo-dori, written in Chinese characters. The Chinese Bulbul (Pycnonotus sinensis) is known as the シロガシラ shiro-gashira 'white head', written 白頭 'white head' in Chinese characters.

The ヒヨドリ hiyo-dori is also known as ヒヨ hiyo. The -dori is, of course, from tori meaning 'bird'. Both hiyo-dori and hiyo are written .
