1. General

Information is from dictionaries and other sources. Pinyin reflects Mandarin pronunciation; for some dialect names, it is no more than a polite fiction. Korean glosses are tentative. Comments and corrections welcome. Hover over Green Lettering Green lettering at this site hides a tool tip with glosses, further explanations, etc. Hover cursor to reveal. to see additional information.

Chinese is a language historically rich in names for accipitrids, but in modern times it appears to have undergone a drastic levelling down.

Perhaps the broadest general term for hawks and eagles is yīng. The eagle as the national symbol of the U.S., Germany, and Russia is called an yīng in Chinese.

In a narrow sense, however, yīng is used for the 'true hawks' (Accipiters), typically the Goshawk, more specifically known as the 苍鹰 cāng-yīng 'darkblue hawk'. The sparrowhawks are known as 雀鹰 què-yīng 'sparrow-hawk'. què refers generally both to sparrows and finches in Chinese; here it clearly means 'sparrow'.

The name yīng is also used for other species, including the kites (traditionally called 老鹰 lǎo-yīng 'old hawk'), and the osprey or 鱼鹰 yú-yīng 'fish hawk' (but see also cormorant).

Eagles and Vultures

Large eagles and vultures are traditionally called either diāo or jiù in Chinese, with no clear distinction between the two. In colloquial speech, the diāo is called a lǎo diāo 'old eagle', where the addition lǎo 'old' is an indication of both familiarity and respect -- tigers (老虎 lǎohǔ) and rats (老鼠 lǎoshǔ) are among the animals that carry it. The term diāo-niǎo 'eagle bird' can occasionally be found.

A note on the character diāo: although -- meaning 'sculpt' -- is the official simplification of traditional character diāo, it lacks the all-important bird radical. For this reason, ornithologists prefer ok, a non-standard simplification containing a simplified bird radical. This simplification is not found in Unicode but it be summoned up on this site by placing your cursor over the character .

Others

Other names for birds in the Accipitrinae include:

The wealth of popular and dialect names for the Accipitridae can often yield confusing results, and indeed, most urban and even many rural Chinese are unaware of finer distinctions. diāo, jiù, and yīng are lumped together as yīng, a word that can be used for almost any kind of hawk or eagle. 老鹰 lǎo-yīng 'old hawk', traditionally meaning either 'kite' or 'sparrowhawk', is now used as a loose general word for 'hawk' or 'eagle'. Both the golfing term 'eagle' and the American musical group 'The Eagles' are called 老鹰 lǎo-yīng 'old hawk' in Chinese.

yīng 'hawk' is used in the term 鹰派 yīng-pài 'hawk faction', referring to a 'warlike hardliner' as in English.

Ornithological naming

Given the profusion of conflicting names, it is not surprising that ornithologists have tried to tidy up them up. Based on head word usage the naming of genera is as shown below. For reference, the previous Taiwanese usage is shown at right, although Taiwan has more recently renamed some genera to conform with Mainland uasge.

Genus Mainland Earlier Taiwanese usage
Based on diāo
Circaetus (short-toed eagle) diāo -
Spilornis (serpent-eagle) diāo jiù
Ictinaetus (black eagle) diāo -
Aquila (eagles) diāo -
Spizaetus (H&M4 Nisaetus) (hawk eagles) yīng-diāo 熊鹰 xióng-yīng
Haliaeetus (sea eagles) hǎi-diāo / hǎi-diāo / jiù
Ichthyophaga (fish eagles) yú-diāo -
Hieraaetus (booted eagle) sǔn-diāo -
Based on yīng
Accipiter (hawks) yīng yīng
Butastur (buzzard eagles) kuáng-yīng jiù
Pernis (honey buzzard) 蜂鹰 fēng-yīng yīng
Based on jiù
Gypaetus/Gyps/Sarcogyps (vultures) 兀鹫 wū-jiù -
Aegypius (vultures) 秃鹫 tū-jiù 禿鹫 tū jiù
Others
Elanus/Milvus/Haliastur (kites) yuān yuān
Circus (harriers) yào zé-kuáng
Buteo (buzzards) kuáng kuáng
Aviceda (bazas) 鹃隼 juān-sǔn -

As can be seen from the table, diāo is applied to large eagles, yīng is used for the hawks (Accipiter), jiù is used for the vultures. In many ways this brings the Chinese naming in conformity not with scientific usage but with English usage. The bazas follow earlier English usage with the name 鹃隼 juǎn-sǔn 'cuckoo-falcon'.

There are two rather striking innovations in regularised Mainland usage:

'buzzard' (Conflicts with Buteo buteo)

Mongolian dictionaries give the meaning of Тарс tars as the female of the Great Spotted Woodpecker and related species (Эмэгчин овууна буюу алаг тогшуурга шувуу).

The male bird is known as Морин хяргуй moriŋ khyargui 'horse sparrowhawk', the female as Хонин хяргуй khoniŋ khyargui 'sheep sparrowhawk' (dictionary).

Харсуун kharsuuŋ or харсун kharsuŋ is found in the names of birds at the Accipitridae, Strigidae, and Sylviidae. The dictionary meaning is 'coarse', 'crude' (e.g. as used of foodstuffs), but in bird naming it appears to have the meaning 'hawk'.

Үүрсээ üürsee is not listed in dictionaries. The meaning probably relates to the word үүр üür meaning 'nest'. There is a verb үүрсэх üürsekh meaning 'to whinny, neigh', but there does not seem to be any apparent connection.

The word ハチクマ hachi-kuma literally 'bee-bear' is written in Chinese characters as 1. 蜂角鷹 'bee horned hawk' or 2. 蜂熊 'bee bear'.

The distinction between 'eagle' and 'vulture' in Chinese is a relatively recent one. The character is traditionally used for both eagles and vultures.

The etymology of サシバ sashiba' is unknown. In Chinese characters it is usually written 1) 差羽, where the verb 差す sasu has a very broad range of meanings, including 'to point', and , here read ba, means 'wing' or 'feather', or 2) , an ancient Chinese raptor name.

Vietnamese Ưng 'hawk' is from the Chinese word , Mandarin yīng, meaning 'hawk'.

Đại bàng is from Chinese 大鵬, Mandarin dà-péng, a large legendary bird sometimes translated into English as 'roc'. In modern China the name is sometimes used commercially (e.g. in company names) as an auspicious equivalent to 'eagle'.

Diều Nhật Bản 'Japanese hawk' appears to be based on an earlier identification of the local species as Buteo buteo japonicus. H&M4, which now recognises Buteo japonicus as a full species, confines its distribution to Japan itself, leaving the Vietnamese name as a possible misnomer.
