The Mongolian name for the tits is Хөх бух khökh bukh literally meaning 'darkblue bull'. In the 2007 "binomial" bird names, this has been amalgamated into one word, Хөхбух khökh-bukh. The Russian Buryat name for the tits is Хүхэ буха khükhe bukha, also meaning 'darkblue bull'. This name was also originally used for the Aegithalidae, although this family was given a modified name in the 2007 names.

Traditionally the tits have also been called Задуулай zaduulai, Задуулай бялзуухай zaduulai byalzuukhai 'zaduulai finch', Задууль zaduul' 'zaduul'', Задууль бялзуухай zaduul' byalzuukhai 'zaduul' finch' and Жадуулай jaduulai. However, the name Задуулай zaduulai is now restricted by Mongolian ornithologists to the Regulidae.

Some other names used for the tits include Хөх цэцгий khökh tsetsgii 'darkblue wagtail' and Хадны бялзуухай khadni byalzuukhai 'stone finch'.

Inner Mongolia

Inner Mongolian ornithological naming uses Задуулай zaduulai (Жадуулай jaduulai) for both the Paridae and the Aegithalidae. More recent lists also incorporate naming with Хөх бух khökh-bukh 'darkblue bull' under the influence of Mongolian usage.

The term 山雀 shān-què 'mountain finch' (or 'mountain sparrow') is the ornithological name for the tits (Paridae). The name has possibly been influenced by Japanese ヤマガラ yama-gara, written 山雀, which is the name of the Varied Tit (Sittiparus varius). Within the Paridae, Mainland usage now reserves 山雀 for species that at the time belonged to the genus Parus. Other genera use the abbreviated form 雀 què.
