As in most languages, the Aegithalidae are named after the tits (Paridae) in Mongolian, with the name Сүүлт хөх бух süült khökh bukh 'tailed blue bull (=tit)'.
Under the 2007 regularised names, however, the genus Aegithalos is called Хөхбухандай khökhbukhandai. The name is derived from Хөх бухандай khökh bukhandai 'blue bullock', a vernacular name that is used for certain kinds of small passerines (identity not clear). What is interesting is how the older name uses the word бух bukh, literally 'bull', whereas the newer name uses the word бухандай bukhandai, literally 'male calf in its second year'.
