General names

This list should be regarded as being 'in beta'. Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Pronunciation still needs fine-tuning. Comments and corrections welcome.

As in most languages, the Aegithalidae are named after the tits (Paridae) in Mongolian, with the name Сүүлт хөх бух süült khökh bukh 'tailed blue bull (=tit)'.

Under the 2007 regularised names, however, the genus Aegithalos is called Хөхбухандай khökhbukhandai. The name is derived from Хөх бухандай khökh bukhandai 'blue bullock', a vernacular name that is used for certain kinds of small passerines (identity not clear). What is interesting is the use of the word бух bukh 'bull' in one name, and бухандай bukhandai 'male calf in its second year' in the other.
