The current Sylviidae is a rump left behind by the break-up old Sylviidae and Timaliidae assemblages. (Other families arising from the break-up include the Locustellidae, Phylloscipidae, Acrocephalidae, and Scotocercidae.)

In Japan, the only member of the Sylviidae is the Vinous-throated Parrotbill (Sinosuthora webbiana), formerly placed with the Timaliidae. The Japanese name for this and other parrotbills is ダルマエナガ daruma e-naga, written 達磨柄長 and meaning 'daruma long-handle'. エナガ e-naga 'long handle' is the name of the Aegithalidae (Long-tailed Tits). The word ダルマ daruma, written 達磨, refers to a squat, red doll in the shape of a monk, often made of papier maché, which is weighted in the base and jumps back up when knocked over. Presumably the name was given due to the round dumpy look of the bird. The term 達磨 daruma itself is from Boddhidharma, the name of a 5th century Indian monk in China who is said to have founded Zen. The word 達磨 daruma is related to 'dharma', a Buddhist term meaning 'law'.

The name セッカ sekka is used in Japanese for several small warbling birds in the Cisticolidae and Sylviidae (Megalurus and Phylloscopus). The etymology of the name is unknown. It is written with the characters 雪加 (literally 'snow-add') or 雪下 (literally 'snow-below'), which have been assigned on the basis of sound only and do not have any relation to meaning.

In its original sense, 雀 què means 'sparrow' in Chinese, but it is also used for the finches and tits. In this case, 雀鹛 què-méi has been coined as the Chinese equivalent of the English term 'tit babbler' and 雅雀 yā-què as the Chinese equivalent of 'crow tit'. The intended meaning of 雀 què in both cases is 'tit'.
