The Locustellidae are a family resulting from the break-up of the Sylviidae (Old World warblers). (Others include the Acrocephalidae, Phylloscipidae, and Scotocercidae, as well as part of the Sylviidae.)

All members of the Locustellidae in Japan belong to the genus Locustella, and, with one exception, are known as センニュウ sennyū in Japanese, written 仙入 or 潜入. The origin of the name is unclear. The two written forms mean 'fairy enter' or 'infiltrate' respectively, but both appear to be ateji (characters arbitrarily assigned to represent the pronunciation).

The one exception to this naming is Locustella pryeri, originally Megalurus pryeri, which is identified as a セッカ sekka. This is written 雪加 or 雪下, meaning 'snow add' and 'snow under' respectively. Both are unetymological and are merely a device for representing pronunciation. セッカ sekka on its own refers to the Zitting Cisticola - Cisticola juncidis, and with descriptors is also used for several species of acrocephalid warbler. In the tables it is glossed (rather unsatisfactorily) as 'cisticola'.

セッカ sekka is used in Japanese for several small warbling birds in the Cisticolidae, Locustellidae, and Phylloscopidae. The etymology is unknown. It is written with the ateji 雪加 (literally 'snow-add') or 雪下 (literally 'snow-below'), characters assigned on the basis of sound only with little or no relation to etymology or meaning.

Sennyū, a term for grasshopper-warblers, is of unknown etymology. It is written with characters meaning 'enter fairy' or 'infiltrate'. The characters function as ateji, an attempt to represent the pronunciation with characters that have little or no relationship to the meaning or etymology.
