Unlike East Asian languages, Mongolian has a good range of names referring to scolopacids. It's difficult to tell from the ornithological names what the pre-ornithological usage of these names was, and there is probably regional variation:

Хомноот khomnoot is a name for the woodcock. Presumably a woodcock's appearance suggests it has a хом khom or хомноо khomnoo, which is either the felt pad that is placed under the pack on a camel's back or the collar of a draught animal.

In Inner Mongolia the woodcock is referred to as Зараг zarag. Үхэр зараг ükher zarag 'ox woodcock' or 'cattle woodcock' is ornithologically used for tringinid birds. Зараг zarag is also used for the Painted Snipe (Rostratulidae).

Another term for scolopacids is Сараалж saraalj (Buryat Һараалжан haraaljan). The woodcock is also known by the alternative name of Ойн сараалж oiŋ saraalj 'forest saraalj'.

Similar and probably related names are Хараалж kharaalj, used for the snipe (genus Gallinago), Салалж salalj, which also refers to the pratincoles (Glareolidae), and Сараалжин saraaljin. Another similar name, also used for the snipe, is Хавтгалж khavtgalj.

Цууцаль tsuutsal' is yet another term for scolopacids. In the traditional script it is written ᠴᠣᠣᠴᠠᠯᠢ (chuuchali) but has come into the modern language in more than one form. Inner Mongolian dictionaries give two pronunciations: (in Cyrillic) Чуучил chuuchil and Чуучаал chuuchaal. In Mongolia, it has been standardised in Cyrillic as Цууцаль tsuutsal'. The form Жууцаль juutsal' also exists. Цууцаль tsuutsal' is found in Buryat in as Суусаал suusaal, also occurring in the forms Суусаалжан suusaaljan (sandpiper), and Суусагаалжан suusagaljan (snipe) (glosses are based on the Russian equivalents). In the list below Цууцаль tsuutsal' is glossed for convenience as 'godwit' in order to distinguish it from other names, but it is not restricted to the godwits.

Тутгалжин tutgaljiŋ is used for the curlews and whimbrels, at least in ornithological Mongolian.

Хөгчүү khögchüü is used for the sandpipers and tattlers.

Элсэг elseg (probably related to Элс els meaning 'sand') is possibly an ornithological rather than popular name and is used for sanderlings, sandpipers, stints, knots, and dunlins.

Ноололдой noololdoi referrring to the ruff or reeve. The ending -дой -doi is a suffix that is often encoutered in bird names. Нооло- noolo- is possibly related to the verb ноолох noolokh 'to pull, tug'.

Сэлээхэй seleekhei used for the phalaropes.

The 2007 list makes a number of changes to ensure that each genus has its own unique name, introducing previously unused terms such as Салалж salalj, Хайргач khairgach (from хайрга khairag meaning 'stone'), and Шалчиг shalchig, which appears to mean 'mud' or 'marsh'.

Хөгчүү khögchüü (sandpipers and tattlers) has been divided into three separate names by means of suffixes. One of these names, Хөгчүүхэй khögchüükhei, with the diminutive suffix -хэй -khei, originally referred to the jack snipe.

The list takes advantage of the two different forms of the word Цууцаль tsuutsal' to create two separate names, Цууцил tsuutsil and Цууцал tsuutsal. However, the difference is less than that seen in the Inner Mongolian variants Чуучил chuuchil and Чуучаал chuuchaal, and will only be perceived as a difference in the vowel in the first syllable.

The Inner Mongolian ornithological names have also undergone a number of modifications, with a general tendency towards harmonisation with the Mongolian names.

Хомноот khomnoot literally means 'having a khomnoo', where a khomnoo or khom refers either to the felt pad that is placed underneath the saddle or pack on a camel's back, or stocks placed over livestock's head. It is possible that the pattern on the woodcock's back or head is suggestive of these items.

Замба zamba has at least three meanings: 1. It forms part of the name of a kind of lizard, Замба гүрвэл zamba gürvel, the Mongolian Rock Agama (Laudakia stoliczkana), 2. the Mallow (Malva neglecta), or 3. a fence. The rationale for the bird name is unclear.

Хархиргалиг kharkhirgalig is not found in ordinary dictionaries; the pronunciation is thus moot. The name is reminiscent of the name of the Common Crane, Хархираа тогоруу kharkhiraa togoruu.

Listed incorrectly as 大沙雉 dà-shāzhì 'large sand-pheasant' in (31).
