Mongolia has two species in the Recurvirostridae, with two different names.

The Black-winged Stilt is known as Хилэн жигүүрт khileŋ jigüürt meaning 'velvet-winged'. In the 2007 "binomial-style" official list, this is melded into a single-word generic name, Хилэнжигүүр khileŋ-jigüür 'velvet-wing'.

The Avocet is known as Ээтэн eeteŋ, which means 'bent-upwards', referring to the bird's bill.

In the Inner Mongolian naming, both are known as Хутгалжин khutgaljiŋ. The pronunciation of this name is uncertain. The word is not listed in dictionaries but could be related to the verb хутгалах khutgalakh 'to stab'. It is also used for the Ibisbill in China.

This word is not found at all in ordinary dictionaries, so the pronunciation is just a guess. The name suggests a connection with the verb хутгалах khutgalakh 'to stab'.
