General names
This list should be regarded as being 'in beta'. Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Many Kazakh, Turkish, and Korean glosses are highly tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.
In Mongolian, as in many languages, the Painted Snipe is identified as a kind of snipe. In the case of Mongolian, the name used is Хараалж kharaalj, which is otherwise used for birds belonging to the genus Gallinago (snipe) of the Scolopacidae.
In the regularised terminology of 2007, however, the Painted Snipe has been given its own distinct name, Хараалжир kharaaljir, in order to distinguish it terminologically from Gallinago. This term is not found in ordinary Mongolian dictionaries.
