General

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome. Malaysian names are now being updated. For consistency, Vietnamese bird names (except for ducks and chickens) are preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird'. Ornithological lists mostly omit this as understood. Hover over Green Lettering Green lettering at this site hides a tool tip with glosses, further explanations, etc. Hover cursor to reveal. to see additional information.

For some reason -- possibly because a number of these birds are shot as game -- English is amazingly rich in words for the Scolopacidae. The Vietnamese naming is much simpler.

The general Vietnamese name for the scolopacids is Rẽ (more properly spelt Giẽ or Dẽ), which I have glossed in the lists as 'snipe'.

Another name used for scolopacids is Choắt, a term not found in most non-specialist dictionaries and technically applied only to certain groups (see below). This name has been glossed in the lists as 'sandpiper'.

An alternative name for the scolopacids is Chim mỏ nhác or Chim mỏ nhát (Southern variant), where mỏ means 'bill'.

The Woodcock has the alternative name of Nhát bà ('grandmother nhat').

Ornithological naming

The ornithological specialisations are summed up in the following table:

Vietnamese name Subfamily, tribe Genera Description
Rẽ ARENARIINI Arenaria Turnstones
CALIDRINI Calidris Knots, sandpipers, stints, ruff
PHALAROPODINI Phalaropus (in 13) Phalaropes
SCOLOPACINI Scolopax, Limnocryptes Woodcock and some snipe
Rẽ giun Gallinago Snipe
Choắt NUMENIINAE Numenius Whimbrel, curlew
LIMOSINAE Limosa, Godwits
TRINGINAE Xenus, Actitis, Tringa Sandpipers, tattlers, redshanks, greenshanks
Nhát bà SCOLOPACINI Scolopax Woodcock
Dò nước PHALAROPODINI Phalaropus (in 34) Phalaropes

Members of the genus Gallinago (the 'true' snipe) are set apart as Rẽ giun 'worm snipe'.

TVC (34) gives the Phalaropes the name Dò nước, which appears to mean 'water-fathomer'.

TVC (34) inadvertently gives the same name, Rẽ lớn, to two separate species: Calidris pugnax and Calidris tenuirostris.

Dowitchers are popularly classified as a kind of snipe, and here 'fork' is a contraction of 'fork-bill', the general name for snipe. The dowitcher name is intended to mean 'sea-snipe'.

แอ่น àeen 'curve; curved' is the same word as แอ่น àeen 'swallow' (Hirundinidae) and presumably derives from the curve of the swallow's wing. Here it is being used ornithologically as 'upcurve(d)'.

Small birds which bob their rear ends up and down while walking are popularly called นกเด้า nók dâw 'bobber (bird)'. Formerly, the name also occurred with an old wildlife prefix as กระเด้า krà-dâw. With the advent of modern scientific nomenclature, almost all of these species ended up in the Motacillidae, where นกเด้าลม nók dâw-lom 'air-bobber-(bird)' are wagtails and นกเด้าดิน nók dâw-din 'earth-bobber-(bird)' are pipits.
