General names

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections are welcome.

The Vietnamese word for 'gull' is or Mòng biển or Mòng bể, where mòng means 'wild duck' on its own, and bể and biển both mean 'sea'. By itself, Mòng bể is assigned by naturalists to Larus ridibindus.

Vietnamese also has the word Hải âu ('sea gull'), derived from Chinese. However, in modern Vietnamese Hải âu has lost any former precision in meaning, and although it still retains the residual meaning of 'gull', it is now officially used for the albatrosses and petrels. The term Hải nga ('sea goose') may also be used for the sea gulls, but is also (unofficially) used for the albatrosses.

The terns are officially known as Nhàn. Unmodified, this is assigned by naturalists to Sterna hirundo (Common Tern). Vietnamese also has the term Én biển ('sea swallow'), and several English-Vietnamese dictionaries give this as the Vietnamese equivalent for 'tern'.

The skimmers (Rynchopinae) are known as 'fish scoopers' (Xúc cá).

With the breakup of the Larus argentatus (Herring Gull) complex, it is difficult to get clear information on the distribution or naming of species. Although I give L. argentatus, L. vegae, L. cachinnans, L. fuscus, and L. heuglini as all occurring in Vietnam, this is simply an attempt to cover all bases. Based on various sources, it seems that there may be three species: L. argentatus/vegae, L. cachinnans, and L. fuscus/heuglini, but at this point nothing is conclusive.
