General

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome. Malaysian names are now being updated. For consistency, Vietnamese bird names (except for ducks and chickens) are preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird'. Ornithological lists mostly omit this as understood. Until recently, the storm-petrels were not listed among Vietnam's avifauna. That changed in 2009 when Trần Văn Chánh (34) added Swinhoe's Storm-petrel (Oceanodroma monorhis) to his list of Vietnamese birds. At the same time, however, he removed the Streak-tailed Shearwater. The reason for this effectivel swap is unclear.

Trần Văn Chánh calls the storm-petrels chim hải yến, from Chinese 海燕 hǎi-yàn 'sea-swallow', which in turn is from Japanese ウミツバメ umi-tsubame 'sea-swallow'. Previously chim yến had been ornithologically restricted to the swifts (Apodidae), reflected in V-E dictionaries which define hải yến as 'salangane'. The new name thus conflicts with previous ornithological naming.

Other members of the Procellariiformes in Vietnam (in the Diomedeidae and Procellariidae) use the name chim hải âu, ultimately from Chinese 海鷗 hǎi-ōu 'sea-gull'.

In ordinary non-specialist E-V dictionaries, 'storm-petrel' is listed as chim báo bão 'storm-announcing bird' or chim hải âu nhỏ 'small sea-gull bird'. The word 'petrel' is given as in dictionaries as hải âu pêtren ('petrel sea-gull = procellariiforme', pêtren from English 'petrel') or simply hải âu 'sea-gull = procellariiforme'.
