General names

Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Species list may not be current. Korean glosses are only tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.

Storm-petrels are called ウミツバメ umi-tsubame, meaning 'sea swallow' and written with the characters 海燕. The alternative reading カイエン kai-en, which is an on-reading of the same characters, also exists.

There are also the regional names ウミツバクラ umi-tsubakura and ウミツバクロ umi-tsubakuro, which use variants of the word ツバメ tsubame 'swallow'. In addition, the storm-petrels have numerous other regional names around Japan.
