General names

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections are welcome.

Note on Vietnamese naming: With the exception of ducks and chickens, it is common for Vietnamese bird names to be preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird', although it is normally omitted in Vietnamese bird lists. All bird names, whether they include chim or not, can be preceded by the classifier con, which is used for living creatures.

Apart from the Black-browed Albatross, the only member of the Procellariiformes (albatrosses, shearwaters, petrels, and storm-petrels) found in Vietnamese waters so far is Calonectris leucomelas, the Streaked Shearwater. Both species are officially referred to as Chim hải âu, derived from the Chinese word for 'seagull' (海鷗 hǎi-ōu).

Leaving aside the expansion of the term for 'seagull' to the Procellariiformes, the Vietnamese names for the Procellariiformes are in some disarray, probably because so few are found in Vietnamese waters. Some sources give the name Chim báo bão 'storm-announcing bird' to the procellariids, although by rights it should probably refer to the storm-petrels or stormy petrels (Hydrobatidae). Hải yến, related to Chinese 海燕 hǎi-yàn 'sea-swallow' and used by the Chinese for the Hydrobatidae, is used for both the Procellariidae and the swiftlets. Some E-V dictionaries give Chim hải âu pêtren as the Vietnamese equivalent of 'petrel' (pêtren is from English 'petrel'), but this term is also applied to both the Procellariidae and the Hydrobatidae.
