Information is from dictionaries and other sources. Pinyin reflects Mandarin pronunciation; for some dialect names, it is no more than a polite fiction. Korean glosses are tentative. The Chinese name for the storm-petrels (including the Oceanitidae) is 海燕 hǎi-yàn meaning 'sea swallow', written with the same characters as in Japanese. The choice of name was influenced by Japanese. Chinese appears at one stage to have used 海燕 hǎi-yàn for birds other than the petrels, including the terns and possibly the swiftlets.

Under H&M4, the ornithological standard adopted for this site, the former Hydrobatidae have been split between the Hydrobatidae (Northern Storm-petrels) and the Oceanitidae (Austral Storm-petrels). All species of Hydrobatidae belong to Hydrobates (formerly Oceanodroma), known as 叉尾海燕 chā-wěi hǎi-yàn 'fork-tailed sea swallows' in Chinese.
