The Zosteropidae consist of the white-eyes (Zosterops) and the yuhinas (Yuhina), the latter long considered to belong to the Timaliidae assemblage.

1. The Chinese name for the white-eyes is 繡眼 xiù-yǎn 'embroidered-eye' or 繡眼鳥 xiù-yǎn-niǎo, 'embroidered-eye bird'. The former was proposed as an ornithological name in the 1927 list of Chinese Birds (35). Alternative names include 白眼儿 bái-yǎnr 'white eye' or 粉眼 fěn-yǎn 'powder-eye', the latter given as a ‘northern name’ in (35).

2. The Taiwanese name for the local Taiwan Yuhina is 冠羽畫眉 guān-yǔ huà-méi 'crest-feather painted-eyebrow', which suggests that it as a kind of Hwamei or Melodious Laughing-thrush. The original proposed name of the yuhinas in (35) was 优西纳 yōuxīnà, a loose transliteration of the English. On the Mainland the yuhinas are called 鳳鶥 fèng-méi 'phoenix-babbler', where fèng 'phoenix' is a standard way of referring to birds with crests, and méi is the ornithological term for babblers, derived from the méi 'eyebrow' in 画眉 huà-méi 'painted eyebrow'.
