General names

Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Species list may not be current. Korean glosses are only tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.

The Japanese name for the white-eye is メジロ me-jiro, consisting of the words me () meaning 'eye' and shiro () meaning 'white'. Shiro here changes to a voiced vowel, as -jiro, when it forms the second part of a compound word. The characters for me-jiro are 目白 (sometimes 眼白).

The genus Apalopteron is known as the メグロ me-guro meaning 'black eye', written 目黒 ('eye + black') in Chinese characters. This is analogous to the name of the whiteeyes, メジロ me-jiro 'eye + white'.

Zosterops japonica is quite familiar to the Japanese. Its name occurs in the phrase 目白押し mejiro-oshi meaning 'jostling' or 'milling', from their habit of gathering on branches in jostling clusters.
