General names

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections are welcome.

Note on Vietnamese naming: With the exception of ducks and chickens, it is common for Vietnamese bird names to be preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird', although it is normally omitted in Vietnamese bird lists. All bird names, whether they include chim or not, can be preceded by the classifier con, which is used for living creatures.

The popular Vietnamese name for the white-eye is Chim khuyên. Khuyên also means 'circle' (from Chinese quān), the name may thus be related to the circles around the birds' eyes.

There also appears to be the name Chim sâu nghệ (literally 'turmeric flowerpecker bird'). In Central Vietnam the white-eyes are known as Chim nghệ 'turmeric-bird', which is normally the name given to the ioras.

The official name of the white-eyes is Chim vành khuyên, where vành means 'rim'.
