General

Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Pinyin readings reflect standard Mandarin usage; for some dialect alternative names it may be of little practical use, especially for South China. Many Korean glosses are highly tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.

The Chinese name for the white-eye is 绣眼鸟 xiù-yǎn-niǎo, meaning 'embroidery eye bird', which may also be seen in the form 绣眼 xiù-yǎn, meaning 'embroidery eye'.

A popular alternative name is 白眼儿 bái-yǎnr 'white eye'. In Beijing, the white-eye is known as 粉眼儿 fěn-yǎnr or 'powder eye'. (Note: represents an 'r' sound at the end of the word, not an independent syllable.) A number of other alternative names exist.
