General names

Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome.

The Chinese name for the wagtails is 鶺鴒 jílíng, which can also be written 脊令 (the same characters minus the 'bird' radical ). The pipits are known as liù (a variant pronunciation, still recognised in Taiwan, is liào).

The wagtails have a number of alternative names in Chinese. The significance of the characters used is not totally clear. Some are probably phonetic.

精列 jīng liè 'spirit row'

連錢 lián qián 'link money' (also 'bridle')

雪姑 xuě gū 'snow aunt'
