General names

This list should be regarded as being 'in beta'. Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Pronunciation still needs fine-tuning. Comments and corrections welcome.

The starlings are known in Mongolian as Тодол todol. The mynahs are known as Хартотол khartotol. (This must be clearly distinguished from Хар тодол khar todol, which refers to the Common Starling. The distinction between тотол totol and тодол todol, while rather artificial, needs to be maintained to prevent confusion).

The Hill Mynah (Gracula religiosa), which is not native to Mongolia, is known as the Тотимсог totimsog. In addition, Хар тоть khar tot' 'black parrot' is found in some sources as a name for the mynahs. Both names suggest a close connection between parrots and mynahs, for obvious reasons.

The 2007 official list realigns the names slightly to accord with the scientific genera:

Genus Old New
Acridotheres (Mynahs) Хартотол khartotol Хартотол khartotol
Sturnia (Starlings) Тодол todol Тодлой todloi
Sturnus (Starlings) Тодол todol
Тодол todol

The name Тодлой todloi is not found in dictionaries, but formations with the suffix-ой -oi and similar suffixes are common in Mongolian (cf the Otidae). However, the тодол / тодлой (todol/todloi) distinction is likely to be lost on most Mongolians.
