In Chinese, starlings are known as 椋鳥 . The name gives the appearance of having been borrowed from Japanese, where the starlings are known as ムクドリ muku-dori (muku birds, written 椋鳥), supposedly from their habit of eating the fruit of the 椋 muku tree, a tall tree related to the elms. The character 椋, pronounced , is used for a different tree in Chinese.
The mynahs are called 八哥 ('eight big-brother'). Unqualified, 八哥 refers to Acridotheres cristatellus, the Chinese Jungle Mynah, which occurs widely over southern China. The name 八哥 is derived from white patches on the wings of A. cristatellus, which look like the letter 八 ('eight') in flight. An older, more traditional or literary name is 鴝鵒 .
