General names

Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome.

In Chinese, starlings are known as 椋鳥 liáng-niǎo. The name has been borrowed from Japanese, where the starlings are known as ムクドリ muku-dori ('muku birds', written 椋鳥), from their habit of eating the fruit of the muku tree (Aphananthe aspera), a tree known in Chinese as 糙葉樹 cāoyè-shù. The character , pronounced liáng, is used for a different tree in Chinese, Cornus macrophylla, a type of dogwood.

The mynahs are called 八哥 bā-gē 'eight big-brother'. Unqualified, 八哥 bā-gē refers to Acridotheres cristatellus, the Chinese Jungle Mynah, which occurs widely over southern China. The name 八哥 bā-gē is derived from white patches on the wings of A. cristatellus, which look like the letter 'eight' in flight. An older, more traditional or literary name is 鴝鵒 qúyù.
