The accentors are known in ornithological Mongolian as Хайруулдай khairuuldai, bearing the distinctive -дай ending found in many passerine songbird names. The significance of хайруул is unclear.

A name found in some non-ornithological sources (including the Wikipedia article on Prunella modularis) is Бор харагчин bor kharagchiŋ meaning 'dun wagtail'.

Inner Mongolia

The Inner Mongolian name for the accentors is Янгаль yangal'. Янгаль yangal' is defined in Mongolian dictionaries as a kind of small bird with a body like that of a lark and a mixture of yellow, black, and white stripes. This name is also used for a number of pipits (Motacillidae).

However, additions to the species list are called Бор боролдой bor boroldoi, meaning 'dun lark' or 'dun pipit', in recent sources (33).

The word Боролдой boroldoi forms part of the name Боролдой болжмор boroldoi boljmor, which refers to the Skylark Alauda arvensis (although in Mongolian ornithological lists it is normally found in the form боролзой borolzoi meaning 'tansy'). The name suggests a similarity or connection between the two types of bird.

Монгол хэлний дэлгэрэнгүй тайлбар толь: Богширгын Хэрийн биетэй, шар, хар, цагаан, алаг чандартай нэг зүйл жижигхэн шувуу.

The name of the accentors in Japanese, イワヒバリ iwa-hibari, literally means 'rock-lark'. When written in Chinese characters it is traditionally written as 岩雲雀 or as 岩鷚. The first character, , is the character for イワ iwa 'rock'. This is followed by 雲雀, literally 'cloud sparrow', or , which are alternative ways of writing ヒバリ hibari 'lark'. However, in Chinese, (pronounced liù or in Taiwan liào) is understood to mean 'pipit'. The name イワヒバリ iwa-hibari was originally applied in Japanese to the Alpine Accentor Prunella collaris but it has since been extended to all members of the Prunellidae except Prunella montanella and Prunella rubida, which had existing names, and a couple of extralimital species.
