General names

The orioles are referred to in Mongolian as Шаргач бялзуухай shargach bilzuukhai 'yellowish finches' or 'bay finches'. Бялзуухай bilzuukhai is a generic term applied to small passerine songbirds. The name has since been shortened to the simple term Шаргач shargach in the official names.

Other names for the orioles include Алтан гургуулдай altan gurguuldai 'golden gurguuldai' (also used for the nightingales) and Алтан заржхин altan zarjkhin 'golden warbler'.
