The Chinese word for 'oriole' is 黄鸝 huáng-lí, which literally means 'yellow-oriole'. In Chinese, this usually refers to the Black-naped Oriole (Oriolus chinensis), a bird famed since ancient times for its song. In the spoken language, 黄鸝 huáng-lí is essentially a single word; the of 黄鸝 huáng-lí does not occur as a word in its own right. In the written language, however, the syllable is used in combination to create names for non-yellow varieties.

As a bird famous in literature, the Black-naped Oriole has a number of traditional names, including 黄鶯 huáng-yīng 'yellow-oriole', 黄鳥 huáng niǎo 'yellow bird', 倉庚 or 鶬鶊 cānggēng 'oriole', and yīng 'oriole'. Although the term yīng traditionally referred to the oriole, it is now the general name for the sylviids in Chinese, probably under the influence of Japanese use of to write the name of their Bush Warbler.

During the Ming Dynasty in China, the Black-naped Oriole (黃鸝 huáng-lí) was depicted in 'Mandarin Squares' (known as 補子 bǔzi) attached to official uniforms of high-ranking bureaucrats. It was the insignia of rank for Grade Eight of civilian official.

yīng is used in traditional literary expressions like:

鶯歌燕舞 yīng-ge yàn-wǔ 'orioles sing and swallows dart' -- a scene of spring, peaceful and prosperous

鶯声燕語 yīng-shēng yàn-yǔ 'trill of an oriole, song of a swallow' -- the sweet delicate voice of a woman
