General
This list should be regarded as being 'in beta'. Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Many Kazakh, Turkish, and Korean glosses are highly tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.
The lapwings are known in Mongolian as Хавтгаалж khavtgaalj or Хавтгалж khavtgalj, with Хавтгаалжин khavtgaaljin a further related name. Some dictionaries give Заараг шувуу zaarag shuvuu, although this appears to be properly used for birds in the Sylviidae.
The Buryat name is Хабтагаалжан khabtagaaljan or Хабтаалжан khabtaaljan.
In contrast, the plovers do not appear to have a widely used name in Mongolian. Officially they have gone by the names Сүвээ цагаан süvee tsagaaŋ meaning 'side-white', mainly applied to the Pluvialinae, and Хиазат khiazat, with a meaning of 'laced' or 'inlaid', mainly applied to the Charadriinae. These meanings are not found in ordinary dictionaries. The name of the family itself has now become Хиазынхан khiazinkhan meaning 'lace (ones)'.
Inner Monglian dictionaries give Тонгор tongor as the Mongolian word for plover. For the record, Japanese-Mongolian dictionaries give Усны шаазгай usni shaazgai 'water magpie'.

The 2007 official list tidies up the assignment of names to genera according to the following (genera do not necessarily match Howard and Moore):
| Genus | Old | New |
The most striking feature is the use of three names for the lapwings, clearly designed to match the division into three separate genera (which is not recognised in Howard and Moore). Besides the creation of one new name (Зуунхурга zuuŋhurag 'hundred lambs') for one genus, the list attempts to use minor linguistic variation between Xавтгаалж khavtgaalj and Xавтгалж khavtgalj to draw a formal distinction between genera. The traditional script makes no distinction between the two names.
