The plovers are called チドリ chi-dori, written 千鳥 (meaning 'thousand bird') in Japanese. Chi-dori can also be written 鵆, which is the same as Chinese 鴴, except that the 'bird' radical is sandwiched in the middle instead of being placed on the right. The plovers are also called モモチドリ momochi-dori, written 百千鳥, meaning 'hundred-thousand bird' (but also used for Cettia diphone, the Japanese bush warbler).
The lapwings are known as ケリ keri, a name which reflects the birds' cry. In combination keri may become -geri. The name keri is written with the characters 計里, which literally mean 'measure' + 'league/mile' but are used solely to approximate the pronunciation. (Normally 計里 would be read keiri.) The word keri may also be written 鳧, a character which originally referred to the wild duck -- and in fact, 鳧 is still also used for kamo or 'wild duck' (see Anatidae).

Notes
Sibley and Monroe combine the Charadriidae (plovers and lapwings) with the Recurvirostridae into a larger family of Charadriidae.
