General

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome. Malaysian names are now being updated. For consistency, Vietnamese bird names (except for ducks and chickens) are preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird'. Ornithological lists mostly omit this as understood. Hover over Green Lettering Green lettering at this site hides a tool tip with glosses, further explanations, etc. Hover cursor to reveal. to see additional information.

The plovers are known in Vietnamese as Choi choi. In Vietnamese the name suggests 'jumping around'.

The lapwings are known as Chim te or Chim te te, although this is not commonly found in ordinary dictionaries. The name is probably related to the lapwing's call. (Te te can also refer to rapid movement in Vietnamese.)

CULTURAL

Vietnamese has the expression nhảy như con choi choi 'jump around like a plover', with the meaning of 'jittery'. This can also be found in the form nhảy choi choi 'jump choi choi' (i.e., 'jump plover').
