General names

Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome.

The plovers and lapwings are known as héng in Chinese.

On the Mainland, the lapwings (genus Vanellus) are given the name 麥雞 mài-jī or 'grain fowl', but this term does not appear in most ordinary dictionaries.

There are a couple of charadriids where Mainland usage is at odds with Taiwanese usage.

The term 環頸鴴 huán-jǐng héng refers to the Common Ringed Plover (Charadrius hiaticula) in Taiwan and the Kentish Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus) on the Mainland.

The term 劍鴴 jiàn-héng refers to the Long-billed Plover (Charadrius placidus) in Taiwan and the Common Ringed Plover (Charadrius hiaticula) on the Mainland.
