The Vireonidae are a New World family with two genera in Asia: Pteruthius and Erpornis. Both are named 鹛 , an ornithological name for the old babbler assemblage (Timaliidae) to which they were previously assigned. 鹛 is a fairly new term derived from the 眉 'eyebrow' in 画眉 'painted eyebrow', which is the Chinese name of the best known of all the babblers and laughing-thrushes, the Hwamei or Melodious Laughing-Thrush. The character 鹛 was created by combining 眉 'eyebrow' with the bird radical 鸟.
The Chinese generic names for the Vireonidae are as follows:
1. The earliest ornithological list of Chinese birds with Chinese names (Chinese Birds (35) in 1927) suggested the clumsy 伯劳状山雀 'shrike-style tit' as a Chinese name for the 'shrike tit'. The eventual name adopted was 鵙鹛 'shrike-babbler', which uses the literary Chinese term for a shrike, 鵙 , in combination with 鹛 'babbler', to yield a two-character compound of the type preferred in Chinese. This name is also used for the Gampsorhynchus shrike tit (Pellorneidae).
2. The Erpornis is known as a 凤鹛 'phoenix babbler' due to the crest on its head. This name reflects the earlier treatment of the Epornis as one of the yuhinas (Zosteropidae). (Curiously, Chinese Birds (35) in 1927 gave two Chinese names for different English names of the Epornis: 耳波尼 for Erpornis and 合破尼斯 for Herpornis.)

Бор bor as an adjective means either 'grey, brown, dun', or 'stubborn'. It is used in some bird names as a noun, including names for the nightjars, reed warblers, Reed Parrotbill, and leiothrix. The common thread is unclear, and the meaning likely differs according to the bird, with nightjars possibly being regarded as 'stubborn', and others as being 'small brownish birds'.
The word Шагшуурга shagshuurag has two main meanings in Mongolian: 'dew' or 'hoarfrost', and 'reed'. As a bird name, it is used in Шагшуурга бялзуухай shagshuurag byalzuukhai, which is the name of a kind of reed warbler and assigned to the genus Panurus in the most recent ornithological naming in Mongolia. In ornithological Inner Mongolian, it is used as a name for the babblers. The shortened form Шагшуур shagshuur is used for the bulbuls.
The term 畫眉 huà-méi 'painted eyebrow' refers to the Hwamei or Melodious Laughing-thrush in the Leiothrichidae.
