The Vietnamese name for the Monarchidae is Họ Rẻ quạt after the genus Rhipidura. Since Rhipidura has its own family, the Rhipiduridae, under Howard and Moore 2003, I've renamed the Monarchidae Họ Thiên đườn, after the paradise flycatchers. |
General names

Note on Vietnamese naming: With the exception of ducks and chickens, it is common for Vietnamese bird names to be preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird', although it is normally omitted in Vietnamese bird lists. All bird names, whether they include chim or not, can be preceded by the classifier con, which is used for living creatures.
The paradise flycatchers are called Chim thiên đường in Vietnamese, meaning 'paradise bird', possibly a translation from English. The monarchs are known as Chim đớp ruồi or 'fly-snapper bird' in Vietnamese, a name also given to other types of flycatcher.
