General

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome. Malaysian names are now being updated. For consistency, Vietnamese bird names (except for ducks and chickens) are preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird'. Ornithological lists mostly omit this as understood. Hover over Green Lettering Green lettering at this site hides a tool tip with glosses, further explanations, etc. Hover cursor to reveal. to see additional information.

There is a rich variety of names for the cuckoos in the Orient. This partly stems from a preoccupation with the cuckoo's distinctive calls in traditional culture, especially poetry.

The most common name for the cuckoos is Chim Cu cu, an onomatopoeic term based on the cuckoos' cry. Other names, also mostly onomatopoeic, are shown in the table below. As assigned by ornithologists, these include:

Name Species/genera Note
Cu cu Cuculus, Surniculus
Chèo chẹo Hawk Cuckoos Note, however, that the suggested name for the Northern Hawk Cuckoo in (34) uses Cu cu instead.
Bắt cô trói cột Indian cuckoo (C. micropterus)
Tìm vịt Chalcites, Chrysococcyx and Cacomantis
Tu hú Koel
Khát nước Chestnut-winged Cuckoo (Clamator) Literally means 'water thirsty'
Phướn Malkohas and ground-cuckoos
Chim Coọc Alternative for Greater Green-billed Malkoha

Another less common term, Chim quyên, has been borrowed from Chinese juān.

Also from Chinese is Chim Đỗ quyên (Chinese 杜鵑 dù-juān 'cuckoo'), but for some reason the meaning later changed and it now refers to the rails. Similarly for Chim Đỗ vũ (杜宇 dù-yǔ).

Coucals

The Vietnamese word for 'coucal' is Chim bìm bịp, from the bird's cry of 'bìm bịp' during the breeding season (March-July).
