Under Sibley and Monroe, these genera belong to the Malaconotinae (wood shrikes), a subfamily of the enlarged Corvidae. Howard & Moore 2003 treat Tephrodornis and Philentoma, as Genera incertae sedis, placed immediately before the Malaconotidae.

General names

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections are welcome.

Note on Vietnamese naming: With the exception of ducks and chickens, it is common for Vietnamese bird names to be preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird', although it is normally omitted in Vietnamese bird lists. All bird names, whether they include chim or not, can be preceded by the classifier con, which is used for living creatures.

In Vietnamese, the wood shrikes (Tephordornis) are known as Chim phường chèo nâu 'brown phuong cheo bird'. I have translated phuong cheo as 'minivet' in the table below, but besides the minivets, it is actually broadly applied to the cuckoo shrikes and flycatcher shrikes.

Philentoma pyrhopterum is Chim đớp ruồi cánh hung 'reddish-winged catch-fly bird' in Vietnamese, reflecting its earlier assignment to the Monarchidae (Monarch flycatchers).
