The original Vietnamese name of the Turdidae is Họ chích chòe, after the forktails. Since the forktails are now placed in the Muscicapidae, I have taken the liberty of naming the Turdidae Họ Hoét.

General names

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections are welcome.

Note on Vietnamese naming: With the exception of ducks and chickens, it is common for Vietnamese bird names to be preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird', although it is normally omitted in Vietnamese bird lists. All bird names, whether they include chim or not, can be preceded by the classifier con, which is used for living creatures.

The official Vietnamese name for the thrushes is Chim hoét. However, this name is not necessarily highly familiar to the laymen as it does not appear in many Vietnamese dictionaries.

Several thrushes in the genus Zoothera are called Chim sáo đất, literally 'ground-starling (bird)'. Sáo is a common bird name applied to a number of similar-looking birds including the ground thrushes, starlings, mynahs, and sometimes magpies.

Chim cô cô, clearly a loan word, is the official name given to the Cochoa.

Ornithologists assign names to turdid genera as follows:

Vietnamese names Genera
Hoét Whistling Thrushes (Myophonus)
Mountain Thrushes/Ground Thrushes (Zoothera)
Thrushes (Turdus)
Hoét đuôi cụt
'short-tailed thrush'
Shortwings (Brachypteryx)
Sáo đất
