General

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome. Malaysian names are now being updated. For consistency, Vietnamese bird names (except for ducks and chickens) are preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird'. Ornithological lists mostly omit this as understood. Hover over Green Lettering Green lettering at this site hides a tool tip with glosses, further explanations, etc. Hover cursor to reveal. to see additional information.

The ornithological Vietnamese name for the thrushes is Chim hoét. However, this name is not necessarily highly familiar to the laymen as it does not appear in many Vietnamese dictionaries.

Several thrushes in the genus Zoothera are called Chim sáo đất, literally 'ground-starling (bird)'. Sáo is a common bird name applied to a number of similar-looking birds including the ground thrushes, starlings, mynas, and sometimes magpies.

Chim cô cô, clearly a loan word, is the ornithological name given to the Cochoa.

ไพล pʰlay (Zingiber cassumunar, Zingiber montanum, or Zingiber purpureum) is a plant in the ginger family (Zingiberidae) widely used in traditional Thai medicine. Extracts typically have a greenish yellow to brown colour, and the name is used here as a colour word equivalent to English 'olivaceous'.
