General

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome. Malaysian names are now being updated. For consistency, Vietnamese bird names (except for ducks and chickens) are preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird'. Ornithological lists mostly omit this as understood. Hover over Green Lettering Green lettering at this site hides a tool tip with glosses, further explanations, etc. Hover cursor to reveal. to see additional information.

The Locustellidae are a product of the break-up of the Sylviidae, a huge assemblage usually referred to as 'warblers' in English. (Others include the Acrocephalidae, Phylloscipidae, and Scotocercidae, as well as part of the Sylviidae.) Naming is as follows:

1. Like most other members of the former Sylviidae, the Locustellidae go by the name Chích, an onomatopoeic word used as a Vietnamese equivalent of English 'warbler'. Since Vietnamese ornithological names have never systematically attempted to distinguish among different types of sylviid, there is no single name that covers the Locustellidae as a whole. Species formerly belonging to the genus Locustella are distinguished in some sources as Chích đầm lầy 'marsh warbler' (which has been adopted here as the family name), but those formerly belonging to the genus Bradypterus are not systematically differentiated at all.

2. The grass warblers (genus Megalurus) are known as Chiền chiện, a name also applied to the prinias and cisticolas (Cisticolidae). This reflects an earlier classification where the warblers, cisticolas, and prinias were placed together.

Vietnamese names from scholarly sources are themselves less than satisfactory. In addition to the usual misprints and inconsistencies, there are cases where the same Vietnamese name is used for more than one species (see tables).

セッカ sekka is used in Japanese for several small warbling birds in the Cisticolidae, Locustellidae, and Phylloscopidae. The etymology is unknown. It is written with the ateji 雪加 (literally 'snow-add') or 雪下 (literally 'snow-below'), characters assigned on the basis of sound only with little or no relation to etymology or meaning.

Sennyū, a term for grasshopper-warblers, is of unknown etymology. It is written with characters meaning 'enter fairy' or 'infiltrate'. The characters function as ateji, an attempt to represent the pronunciation with characters that have little or no relationship to the meaning or etymology.
