General

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome. Malaysian names are now being updated. For consistency, Vietnamese bird names (except for ducks and chickens) are preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird'. Ornithological lists mostly omit this as understood. Hover over Green Lettering Green lettering at this site hides a tool tip with glosses, further explanations, etc. Hover cursor to reveal. to see additional information.

The Acrocephalidae are a product of the break-up of the Sylviidae (Old World warblers). Other families arising from this break-up include the Locustellidae, Phylloscipidae, and Scotocercidae, as well as part of the Sylviidae.

Members of the old Sylviidae assemblage went by the name Chích, an onomatopoeic word used as a Vietnamese equivalent of English 'warbler'. Since Vietnamese ornithological names have never attempted to systematically distinguish among different types of sylviid, there is no single distinctive name for the Acrocephalidae.

Family name

Editors at Vietnamese Wikipedia suggest Chích sậy 'reed-warbler' as a suitable name for the reed warblers. While Wikipedia by no means represents any kind of scholarly consensus, we have tentatively adopted this name for the family.

セッカ sekka is used in Japanese for several small warbling birds in the Cisticolidae, Locustellidae, and Phylloscopidae. The etymology is unknown. It is written with the ateji 雪加 (literally 'snow-add') or 雪下 (literally 'snow-below'), characters assigned on the basis of sound only with little or no relation to etymology or meaning.
