General names

The following is based on analysis of dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections are welcome.

Note on Vietnamese naming: With the exception of ducks and chickens, it is common for Vietnamese bird names to be preceded by the word Chim meaning 'bird', although it is normally omitted in Vietnamese bird lists. All bird names, whether they include chim or not, can be preceded by the classifier con, which is used for living creatures.

Prinias and cisticolas are widely found in Vietnam, from north to south. They are known as Chim chiền chiện chiền chiện bird', which is probably onomatopoeic. (This name is also used for Megalurus palustris (Striated grassbird) -- see Megalurinae.)

The Hill Prinia (Prinia atrogularis) is known in Chinese and Japanese as the "black-throated prinia"; in Vietnamese as the "white-throated prinia". The reason for this curious contradiction in naming appears to lie in breeding and non-breeding plumage. Careful observation will reveal that the throat of P. atrogularis is white in non-breeding plumage and black in breeding plumage.
