The ibises are known in Chinese as 䴉 huán, also read xuán. Due to their resemblance to the herons, several of the ibises have names related to those birds. The Japanese Crested Ibis is also called the 朱鷺 zhū-lù ('vermilion heron') and the spoonbills are known as 琵鷺 pí-lù 'spatula herons'.
