General

Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Species list may not be current. Korean glosses are only tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.

The Japanese word for 'ibis' is トキ toki. Used on its own, this name almost invariably refers to the celebrated and highly threatened Japanese Crested Ibis (Nipponia nippon). The name トキ toki is also notable for the number of ways it can be written in Chinese characters, including: 朱鷺 ('vermilion heron', from Chinese), 桃花鳥 ('peach flower bird', probably from Chinese) , (meaning 'bustard' in Chinese), (believed to have been a kind of quail in Chinese), and (a character claimed to have been created by the Japanese themselves).

The spoonbills are known as ヘラサギ hera-sagi 'spatula herons', written 篦鷺.
