General names

Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome.

Herons and bitterns are broadly called in Chinese. The character is made up of the phonetic (meaning 'road') on top, and the character niǎo or 'bird' underneath.

Herons are also known as 鷺鷥 lùsī (more narrowly applied to the egrets) or 鸕鶿 lùcí.

On the Mainland, ornithologists have given the bitterns and smaller herons the more specialised name of yan yán, a practice that is not followed in Taiwan. (Note: yan is a non-standard simplification that is not found in computer character sets. The character jiān, which is a different bird (species undetermined) in Classical Chinese, is often used in place of yan, a practice we follow here. Place your mouse over to bring up the correct character.)

The Taiwanese 'Far East English-Chinese Dictionary' (1994) gives the term 五位鷺 wǔ-wèi-lù as the Chinese equivalent for Night Heron, clearly under the influence of Japanese 五位 (ゴイ goi).
