The Mongolian name for the grebes is Шунгуур shunguur, related to the verb шунгах shungakh 'to dive'. (It is not to be confused with Шумбуур shumbuur, derived from the similar verb шумбах shungakh, also meaning 'to dive', which refers, however, to the Pochards.)
