General names

Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Comments and corrections welcome.

The grebes are known as 鷿鷈 pìtī in Chinese (or sometimes 鷿鵜 pìtí, where the second character means 'cormorant' or 'pelican'). The word pìtī is one of that minority of Chinese words that is inherently polysyllabic. However, when written, the word is split up into two characters, reinforcing the perception that Chinese is a 'monosyllabic' language.
