Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Pinyin readings reflect standard Mandarin usage; for some dialect alternative names it may be of little practical use, especially for South China. Many Korean glosses are highly tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.
The grebes are known as 䴙䴘 in Chinese (or sometimes 䴙鹈 , where the second character means 'cormorant' or 'pelican'). (If your browser can't see the characters, place your mouse over the top).
The word is one of that minority of Chinese words that is inherently polysyllabic. When written, however, it is split up into two characters, thus reinforcing the common perception that Chinese is a 'monosyllabic' language.
The characters to write in the traditional (鷿鷈) and simplified (䴙䴘) scripts are the same characters, although the placing of the radicals is different. The radical 鳥 / 鸟 for 'bird' is found on the right in the simplified characters, at the bottom and left respectively in the traditional characters as used in Taiwan.
