The pelican is known as Хотон khotoŋ (or Хотон шувуу khotoŋ shuvuu 'pelican bird') in Mongolian. An alternative name is Шунгуут shuŋguut, another bird name based on the verb шунгах shuŋgakh 'to dive' (cf Podicipedidae). The name Пелес peles is given in one dictionary.
Hunting by herders for traditional use of the bill is a threat to the Mongolian population.
