General names

Information is based on dictionaries and other sources. Species list may not be current. Korean glosses are only tentative. Comments and corrections welcome.

In Japanese, the pelican is known as ペリカン perikan, borrowed from English.

The word ガランチョウ (伽藍鳥) garan-chō ('temple bird'), borrowed from Chinese, survives mainly as an archaic variant.

The common species in Japan is Pelecanus crispus (Dalmatian Pelican). In many sources, this is identified as Pelecanus philippensis under the Japanese name ハイイロペリカン (灰色ペリカン) hai-iro perikan 'grey pelican'.
