General

Information is from dictionaries and other sources. Pinyin reflects Mandarin pronunciation; for some dialect names, it is no more than a polite fiction. Korean glosses are tentative. Comments and corrections welcome. The woodpeckers are known appropriately enough as 啄木鸟 zhuó-mù-niǎo, literally 'peck-wood bird', i.e. 'woodpecking bird'. The form 啄木 zhuó-mù (literally 'peck-wood', i.e., 'wood-pecker') is also found. The woodpeckers are sometimes also called 凿木鸟 záo-mù-niǎo 'wood-drilling bird'. A number of dialect terms referring to the distinctive wood-pecking habit of the birds include 锛打木 bēn-dǎ-mù 'adze-strike-wood', 锛得儿木 bēn-dér-mù 'adze-get-wood', 锛啄儿鸟 bēn-zhuór-niǎo 'adze-peck bird', 打木 dǎ-mù 'strike-wood' and 喷打木 pēn-dǎ-mù 'jet-strike-wood' (where 'jet' refers to a sudden gushing action).

liè is an older more literary Chinese word for woodpecker, now found only in some ornithological names (e.g., the ornithological name of the Wryneck yǐ-liè 'ant lie' and some ornithological names such as those of the barbets Ramphastidae and honeyguides Indicatoridae). This name is written in some sources as liè literally meaning 'cut-into-bits'. This is probably a folk etymology or an attempt to substitute a more 'meaningful' character.

The Wryneck has a variety of popular names, including some that refer to its neck and others that refer to its coloration.

The 'standard' Inner Mongolian pronunciation of шоргоолж shorgoolj is шургуулж shurguulj.

Name appears to be derived from тоншуур toŋshuur, a piece of slightly convex hollowed out wood with a slit in the top that is struck with a stick.

Дух dukh in the sense of 'nape' or 'occiput' is obsolete or dialect. Its normal modern sense is 'forehead'.

The character 裂 liè 'split, shred' may sometimes be found substituted for 鴷 liè 'woodpecker', e.g. in FS.
